Following a separation, sometimes a parent will want to relocate to a different area to live with the children. Moving a short distance is not an issue. Moving a significant distance, perhaps interstate or overseas can be a major issue.
A parent is not permitted to relocate children without the agreement of the other parent or if an agreement cannot be reached, the parent can only relocate the children if there is a Court Order.
Parents may seek to relocate for many reasons. For those living in regional areas, it may be necessary to relocate to pursue employment. Sometimes parents wish to relocate to live with a new partner or to be closer to family.
The main reason a parent might object to their children relocating is that the time they spend with the children will be reduced. Sometimes alternate arrangements can be reached which will be satisfactory for that parent.
